A town designed around water
Miami Lakes lies about 15 miles northwest of downtown Miami. The Graham family began developing it in 1962 on former dairy farmland, to a master plan by Lester Collins, with curving lakes running through the neighborhoods and a town center called Main Street. Residents voted to incorporate in December 2000. The 2020 census counted 30,467 residents and 12,090 housing units in its 6.5 square miles, at about 7 feet above sea level.
Lakes are lovely until they are full. When water gets into a Miami Lakes home, call (844) 906-3984. Dominion Water Damage is a free phone line, not a restoration company; it transfers you to an independent local company that serves the town.

What the town asks residents to do
Keep swales and drains clear
Blocked swales, inlets, pipes and canals cause overflow onto roads and property. Residents must maintain the swale beside their property, and should not fill or pave over it.
Mind the lake bank
If your property borders a lake or canal, the town asks you to keep the bank clear of brush and debris. Never dump anything into drains, lakes or canals; violations can bring fines of up to $500 a day.
Check your coverage
Standard homeowners policies do not cover flood. Mortgage-required flood policies often cover only the building, not contents, and new NFIP coverage has a 30-day waiting period.
